Frequently Asked Questions
What do we mean by breathable?
Breathability is a term used within the building industry to describe how a substrate allows water molecules and air molecules to pass through it. Our independent scientific testing confirmed that Emperor Textured Basecoat has little effect on breathability and does not restrict the movement of air. It was tested to have an SD breathability rating of 0.04, making it not just breathable, but highly breathable.
Do I need to paint over Emperor Textured Basecoat?
Yes, Emperor Textured Basecoat is not a finishing product, it is a basecoat for creating textured surface ready to be painted. You must apply two-coats of Emperor Masonry Paint over the basecoat once it has fully dried.
What surfaces can I apply Emperor Textured Basecoat to?
Emperor Textured Basecoat to any bare or previously painted masonry and render, including brick, stone, cement and silicone-based render.
What is the coverage of Emperor Masonry Paint?
The amount of Emperor Textured Basecoat you will require for your project depends on the finish you are achieving and the area of the work. You can expect to achieve between 350-500g per m2, depending on the heaviness of the texture, with lighter textures achieving a higher coverage per m2. As a guide, an 8kg tub of Emperor Textured Basecoat should sufficient to cover 16m2. Only one-coat of Emperor Textured Basecoat is required.
How long should I leave before painting?
Emperor Textured Basecoat must be allowed to dry for 24 hours at 20°C before you overcoat using Emperor Masonry Paint. It is touch dry and showerproof in 4 hours at 20°C. At lower temperatures this time will be extended.
Can I apply Emperor Textured Basecoat in low temperatures?
Yes, but it cannot be applied in temperatures less than 5°C.
Is Emperor Textured Basecoat just for patch repairs?
Emperor Textured Basecoat is highly versatile. It can firstly be used for hiding cracks and other imperfections, where repairs have been made. It can also be used to create a textured finish on full exterior walls, preventing the need for more costly and time consuming rendering.
How soon after raining can it be applied?
Once the surface is completely dry, which depends on the air temperature at the time.
What is the drying time?
Emperor Textured Basecoat is touch dry and showerproof in 4 hours at 20°C. It must be allowed 24 hours at 20°C before you can paint the surface. Lower temperatures will extend the drying time.
How durable is Emperor Textured Basecoat
Emperor Textured Basecoat has been designed with our nano-technology, giving it superior performance in all weather conditions. It also actively binds to surfaces in order to create a strong bond for long-term performance. The result is that Emperor Textured Basecoat optimises the performance of your wall and once overcoated with Emperor Masonry Paint will protect your home from damage.
What is the difference between Emperor Textured Basecoat and a render?
There are a number of differences between Emperor Textured Basecoat and traditional render. One of the main differences is that it can be applied via a brush or roller, whereas a render is generally applied using a trowel or hawk, making it a specialist project that is a difficult task to complete at home yourself. Emperor Textured Basecoat can be applied to repaired surfaces to hide them, allowing anyone to repair masonry or render easily and effectively. Emperor Textured Basecoat is also quicker drying, meaning you can repair surfaces and paint them without waiting months for render to dry out.
